- 1What it takes to build and lead teams delivering technology solutions in agricultural and rural contexts.
Overview
Leading innovation in rural economies requires a fundamentally different mindset from leading urban tech teams. The constraints are different, the feedback loops are longer, and the tolerance for failure is lower — because for farmers, a failed product doesn't just mean lost time, it can mean lost livelihoods.
"Not occasional visits, but sustained immersion."
South Africa loses 30% of fresh produce between farm gate and retail shelf — a R36 billion annual waste problem.
Solving post-harvest loss represents the single largest value creation opportunity in SA agriculture.
Context Matters
The best rural innovation leaders I've observed share a common trait: they spend significant time in the field. Not occasional visits, but sustained immersion. They understand the rhythm of agricultural seasons, the social dynamics of farming communities, and the practical constraints of connectivity, power, and literacy.
