Key Findings
- 1South Africa's Big-4 used to make new founders queue. That's changing fast — FNB's First Business Zero and Absa's new straight-through Business Evolve journey now open Sole Props, CCs and Pty Ltds (up to 4 directors) the same day, fully online. TymeBank's EveryDay Business is fully self-serve from the app or a mall kiosk.
- 2Step outside South Africa and the bar moves again. Equity's EazzyBiz, KCB's Vooma/iBank, Access Bank's QuickBucks and Ecobank's Omni Plus routinely get a sole trader or registered entity transacting in under five minutes — national ID rails do most of the heavy lifting.
- 3The MSME funding gap is still huge — about $5.7 trillion globally (IFC, 2024) and an estimated $331 billion across Sub-Saharan Africa on the last available IFC regional sizing (IFC / SME Finance Forum, 2018) — so the first five minutes of the customer journey is genuinely the most leveraged distribution decision a bank makes.
- 4Mastercard's 2025 SME Confidence Index found that more than 90% of South African SMEs want their bank to act like a growth partner, not a custodian. Most incumbents still fall short of that on day one.
- 5Pan-African challengers are winning on three things you can actually measure: time-to-open, paperwork load, and how much value comes bundled with the account. They're quietly setting the benchmark SA's Big-4 now have to chase.
Why Onboarding Is the New Competitive Front
Small and medium businesses are basically the engine of the African economy — over 90% of all firms, around 70% of jobs, and roughly half of GDP. And yet, 70% of MSMEs in emerging markets still can't get a bank loan when they need one. The puts the global funding gap at $5.7 trillion .
Here's the awkward bit: most of those founders aren't disengaging because credit is too expensive. They're falling out earlier — at the onboarding step. Document checklists that read like a tax audit, surprise branch visits, identity checks that fail because the founder is not an existing personal customer. and the both call it out as the first place SMEs walk away from the formal banking system .
So we took ten of the continent's most relevant banks and lined them up against each other on exactly that — the first five minutes. , , , and in South Africa, then Equity Bank, , , and Ecobank across the rest of the continent.

The South African Landscape
Five players really matter for SA SMEs: the Big-4 (, , , ) plus the disruptor everyone keeps glancing at, . All five do digital onboarding now — but how digital, and how quickly, varies more than you'd think.
— First Business Zero. The online flow splits founders by turnover (under R10m vs over R10m). If you're already an FNB personal customer, you can start the business application on fnb.co.za and finish FICA inside the app with a biometric check. FNB also runs its Digital Enablement Programme (DEP) — an 18-month support track delivered with Edge Growth, open to majority Black-owned businesses with annual turnover between R2m and R10m — refreshed and re-promoted in April 2026 to help SMEs do more than just open an account .
— BizLaunch. Designed primarily for newer businesses, with the original under-12-months positioning now mostly reflected in pricing tiers rather than a hard eligibility cap . BizLaunch starts at R315/month, BizLaunch Plus at R700/month with more hand-holding. The application starts online, but you'll likely upload documents along the way — and for BizLaunch Plus, a branch visit with your FICA pack is still on the cards.
— Business Evolve (Straight-Through Journey). This is the one that's just shifted the goalposts in SA. Absa has rolled out a straight-through onboarding journey across the full Business Evolve range — Pay-as-you-Transact, Bundle and Premium — that gets a founder opening and transacting on a business account the *same day*, with no branch visit. It works for Sole Proprietors, Close Corporations and Pty Ltds, and for CCs and Pty Ltds it accommodates up to 4 directors fully online via remote KYC and digital director consent. named Absa Africa's Best Digital Bank for SMEs in 2025 for the rebuilt SME platform, integrated lending and journey instrumentation behind it .
— Money app + Avo. Smaller businesses get pointed at the standard Money app and Online Banking — no monthly subscription fee — with the Avo super-app B2B marketplace as a sweetener. Bigger SMEs use the Nedbank Business Hub portal .
— EveryDay Business. If you're not yet CIPC-registered, you can open an EveryDay account in roughly five minutes — either in-app or at a TymeBank kiosk in Pick n Pay, Boxer or TFG. Same account, just unlocked for business use, no separate FICA pack on the unregistered tier . GoTyme is now pushing harder into mall-based hubs to deepen the 'phygital' play .

VerifiedTymeBank set the new SA benchmark — five minutes, no branch.
The Big-4 have responded — FNB's First Business Zero and Absa's new straight-through Business Evolve journey (Sole Prop, CC and Pty Ltd with up to 4 directors) now give brand-new-to-bank founders a fully digital, same-day path of their own.
Where SA Onboarding Still Breaks
Even with all the digital uplift, three friction points keep showing up — both in user research and on the banks' own help pages.
