Methodology: Cells show a blend of (i) pre-existing customs-union and FTA preferences and (ii) gazetted AfCFTA Phase I Category A schedules where in force. Intra-SACU, intra-EAC, intra-WAEMU, and intra-ECOWAS-FTA pairs are 0% on originating goods independently of AfCFTA. Other intra-African pairs reflect a weighted average of MFN and applied preferential rates, since each State Party designates its own Category A/B/C tariff lines β there is no continent-wide schedule. Sources: AfCFTA Secretariat Phase I gazettes (Oct 2024, Ethiopia late 2025), UNCTAD TRAINS 2024, WTO Tariff Profiles 2025, Tralac State of Ratification (Feb 2026).
Why this matters for executives
Switching inputs from non-AfCFTA to qualifying African suppliers can cut landed cost by 8β22% in autos, textiles, and pharmaceuticals β provided the product-specific rules of origin are met. AfCFTA RoO are not a single 60% threshold: they combine change-of-tariff-classification, specific manufacturing processes, wholly-obtained criteria, and HS-chapter-specific value-added thresholds. Verify per HS code in the RoO Calculator tab.
Non-LDC State Parties complete their Category A liberalisation within 5 years of 1 Jan 2021 (by 2026); LDCs have 10 years (by 2031). Sensitive (B) lines unwind over 10β13 years, and up to 3% of lines (C) stay protected. Each country's A/B/C designations differ β check the destination's national gazette before assuming a sector is liberalised.
SA, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, and Nigeria are emerging as preferential gateways. Locating assembly or fulfilment in these hubs gives lowest-tariff access across the 49 State Parties that have deposited ratification β and aligns with the Secretariat's priority sectors (automotive, pharmaceutical, transport & logistics, agri-business).
